What Is An Academy?

An Academy is a state funded school, funded directly by central government and therefore independent of local authorities. They tend to have a lot more freedoms than schools under the local authority and are able to set their own term times, control their own admissions process and even the curriculum.

When a school becomes an Academy, it is then run by a Charitable Trust and the school employees transfer over to it, however, on a day to day basis everything is still managed by the Headteacher who is then referred to as a principle.

Can I Apply For The Academisation Process Myself?

Yes. A headteacher or chair of governors representing a local authority maintained school can apply for academisation themselves.
