Listing Details

Elaina, a former primary school teacher, is an author, illustrator, and a trustee of the Robert Stephenson Trust. Based in Newcastle upon Tyne, Elaina uses her extensive experience working with children and her sense of fun to create stories that capture young children’s imagination and take them on an adventure. Her three daughters are the main characters for three of her book series, ‘Amelia and her Time Travelling Trainers’, ‘Imogen the Dinosaur Whisperer’ and ‘Violet and the Magic Vault’.

Science and Engineering – ‘Amelia and her Time Travelling Trainer’s: Take a Trip with George and Robert Stephenson’ is all about the success of the ‘Rocket’ locomotive at the Rainhill Trials in 1829. Children will learn about how steam engines work, and why ‘Rocket’ had the best design. ‘Amelia and her Time Travelling Trainers: Take a Trip to See Robert Stephenson’ has been written to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, the first passenger railway to use steam trains to transport passengers. Children can learn all about ‘Locomotion’ and why it was such an important invention.

Animals and flowers (including minibeasts and nocturnal animals) – Current titles include ‘Little Ladybird and the Perilous Picnic’, ‘Tired Little Bat’ and ‘Little Robin and the delicious Gingerbread’. ‘Little Lost Mole’ (2nd. ed.) will be released in 2026 and ‘Little Bee, Lost in Laundry’ will be released in 2027.

Dinosaurs – ‘Imogen the Dinosaur Whisperer: Triceratops Trouble’, released in May 2024, is inspired by her middle daughter and was shortlisted for the BBC Ignite Programme in 2021 and made it to the 4th and final round of the Best Indie Book Awards in 2024. Imogen has a special gift, she can talk to dinosaurs! With Spot the Gecko by her side, Imogen keeps the dinosaurs safe and out of trouble. The second instalment ‘Imogen the Dinosaur Whisperer: Ankylosaur Antics’ is due to be released in 2026.

Magical Stories – ‘Violet and the Magic Vault’ involves a vault of dressing up clothes only Violet (and Fluffily the guinea pig) can see. The vault presents them with an unfinished costume and sends them on an adventure to find the missing piece. ‘Violet and the Magic Vault: A Mermaid Adventure’ is currently available, while new instalments are due for release in 2026/2027 and include ‘A Pirate Adventure’ and ‘A Broomstick Adventure’.

Also available is ‘The Workshop Elves and the Missing Baubles’ a magical festive story which is very popular due to the antics of the mischievous Christmas baubles.

Elaina visits libraries for book readings and craft events, schools for author days, which include lessons in character description and scene setting, and events in collaboration with Grasmere GingerbreadⓇ and Hopetown Darlington.

Amelia and her Time Travelling Trainers: Take a Trip with George and Robert Stephenson – Full of engineering and historical detail – and fun! As a retired but still active professional engineer, I think that Elaina's idea of equipping Amelia with her TIME TRAVELLING TRAINERS is brilliant and even technically prophetic – maybe! As to the story of the trip to see the Stephenson's and their locomotives, I commend the relevance, timeliness and accuracy of the tale along with all the engineering and historical detail. Above all it's FUN !! David Dawson MSc CEng MIMechE
